In July 1995 , The University Presbyterian Church in Seattle sponsored a ( VWAP ) trip to the great continent of Africa. The country of destination was Kenya. VWAP stands for "Vacation With A Purpose." Some marine biologists who were on there way to Florida thought it meant "Vacation With A Porpoise". They got totally excited until we straightened out the meaning of the acronym. Our project was to work at the Githiga Orphaned Children's Home in Githiga. Githiga is a small village a few hours outside Nariobi. Work consisted of minor roof repair, major ceiling tile replacement and a lot of painting.
Before joining the group in Nariobi, Kent Sherburne and I went on a brief safari in Amboseli National Park. Lots of wildlife. Everything but a Simba.

Elephants on the move in Amboseli National Park on the Kenya /Tanzania border. From here you can see the hightest point in Africa, Mt Kilimanjaro. At 19,340 ft (5895m) the peak is a sight to behold. The picture above (upper right) is the only good shot I could get. With all the haze, it's difficult to see the entire mountain. You can see snow fields on the summit at the upper left hand corner of the photograph.
